Interactive Tele-Stereo-Vision – a Module for High Fidelity Telepresence

The visual modality of human perception plays a key role in performing various exploration and manipulation tasks, either directly or by means of a telepresence system. Telepresence systems often deteriorate the impression which is captured in a remote environment, communicated via network and output to an operator by a display. Especially tele-stereo-vision is affected adversely, requiring the developement of qualified remedies. This article discusses typical problems of visual telepresence systems and proposes certain improvements with respect to major deficiencies. The efficacy of the presented solutions is demonstrated by means of an experimental 3-D telepresence setup developed in our laboratory.
