A multi-beam infrared sensor is described, which was especially designed for driver assistance systems like adaptive cruise control (ACC). The properties of this sensor will be compared to 76–77 GHz long-range Radar sensors, which have the most significant share in the market at the moment. While multi-beam infrared sensors deliver significantly better results for the lateral position and the width of objects, long-range Radar sensors measure the relative velocity of objects directly using the doppler effect. This article describes how this disadvantage could be nearly eliminated by methods of applied digital signal processing considering fixed point arithmetics. Besides, the developing environment and the methodology are introduced and the results are illustrated by measured data.
