In automotive engineering information about the direction of motion in addition to the speed of a car is of uppermost importance. For example angle and magnitude of the velocity at the wheels represent a fundamental measurement when developing and adjusting chassis. Hence, in this article we present an optical and with it slip-free and contactless measurement scheme for the two dimensional speed over ground of cars. Based on partial sum images of a sequence of the moving road surface the velocity vector is measured by means of digital image processing. In addition to the measurement scheme itself a proposal for a self-assessment of the sensor is made. Furthermore, first experimental results measured during representative maneuvers in a test car are shown and discussed.
