The Future of the SI Engine – the SI Engine of the Future

Since the invention of the gasoline engine in the year 1876 (Nicolaus August) it has achieved and maintained the position of the most important propulsion system in the worldwide passenger traffic. However, in recent years the market share of the diesel engine has strongly increased, mainly due to the positive torque characteristic. Furthermore the hydrogen fuel cell seems to be the ideal propulsion system of the future. On the other hand, today still more than 80 percent of the worldwide passenger cars with first registration are powered by a gasoline engine. Also the gasoline engine could easier realize the more stringent future emission legislations than a diesel engine. A lot of technical innovations are currently available to close the gap to the diesel engine concerning fuel consumption and output torque. Has the gasoline engine with that a real future perspective?
