Evaluation of the Uncertainty in the Determination of the Attenuation with a Vector Network Analyzer

As there is no true value in metrology, each measured value is an estimated value that has some uncertainty range. The statement of a measured value can only be interpreted with an accompanying statement of the measurement uncertainty. The goal of a calibration action is to establish traceability to national or international standards. In the attenuation calibration of high frequency components such as attenuators, directional couplers, etc. by vector network analyzer systems, a number of system dependent factors must be taken into account, in addition to the reference standard used (traceability reference). These influences must be assessed, calculated, or taken from technical documents for a realistic evaluation of the measurement uncertainty.
