Apart from the full automation of urban rapid rail transit lines the subsequent automation of existing lines is of major importance. A new method is outlined which can be used for strategically oriented analyses to assess the general feasibility and the expected benefit with miminum effort. The focus is put on a demand-dependent control strategy of the train service which requires full automation.
