Chemical sensors provide ways to complement or replace established analytical methods in the area of gas and odor analysis and open up new low-cost applications. During the past 10 to 15 years, a new type of measurement devices has been developed under the catch phrase “electronic nose”, combining sensor arrays by means of pattern recognition. This article describes potentials and limitations of electronic nose technology.
