The calculation of discrete Fourier spectra of periodic functions is usually performed today by the aid of of the fast Fourier transform (FFT). However, if the function is restricted to a finite interval, which is not an entire multiple of the basic period, erroneous Fourier coefficients will be obtained. Although this effect is well known in literature, it is not possible up to now, to quantify the occuring errors. To close this gap, the problem will be dealt with analytically in this paper. Thus formulae will be attained, which enable to calculate exactly the Fourier coefficients of periodic functions, which are restricted to a finite interval.
