Development of an Optical pH Sensor for Early Detection of Danger of Corrosion in Steel-Reinforced Concrete Structures

Keywords: Corrosion, steel-reinforced concrete, monitoring, pH value, fiber optic sensor

The decrease of the pH value of cement-bound matrix in steel-reinforced structures due to chemical attacks damages corrosion protective layers and results in serious deteriorations of the structures. To date commercially available systems for monitoring the pH value in steel-reinforced concrete structures do not meet all technical requirements. Hence a concrete-embeddable fiber optic pH sensor was developed.
