Development of a Voltage Pulse Standard for the Characterization of High-Frequency Components

Keywords: voltage pulse standard, optoelectric techniques, photoconductive switches, oscilloscope calibration, rise time

For several years the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) has been developing opto-electronic techniques that allow for the characterization of high-frequency components. Such techniques offer a measurement bandwidth that is not accessible with purely electrical techniques like network analyzers. In this paper, the development of a national voltage pulse standard for coplanar and coaxial structures is described. The importance of this primary standard is illustrated by an application example where the time response of a 70-GHz sampling oscilloscope is characterized.
