The increasing complexity of production processes in innovative application areas creates new requirements on process analysis and modelling. Typical areas are reactive solid state processes, complex polymerisations as well as biotechnological processes. The analysis of such extremely complex systems can be supported by specialised methods which are summarised as “data mining”. They allow the reliable extraction of complex patterns with a high content of information from unstructured sets of data. The software and technical issues of data mining will be discussed according to the relevance to process data analysis. Application workflows will be demonstrated on the examples of a biotech production process as well as a polymer process.
