Cylinder pressure signals contain valuable information of the combustion process. This motivated the development of cylinder pressure sensors with vehicle life-time durability and their use for engine control. However, in order to compensate for additional sensor costs, all possible information contained in the cylinder pressure signal is to be exploited: closed-loop ignition timing and exhaust gas recirculation control can be achieved as well as the control of the warm-up procedure of a SI engine. An overview on further cylinder pressure based engine control functions is given.
