The contribution is based on a view leading to a generalization of state, disturbance, nonlinearity, coupling and fault observers with internal proportional and integral feedback. The proportional-integral observer (PI-Observer) is this generalization and is described with regard to function, purpose, object, structure, behaviour and design. Further aspects are effect system, reconstruction model, asymptotic robustness, asymptotic reconstruction, reconstruction matrix, linear-quadratic design and reconstruction parameters. The essential features of this linear observer for the reconstruction of control system and effect system variables are emphasized.
