This paper deals with the object-orientated modelling and simulation of a diesel engine in Modelica/Dymola, a comparison with Matlab/Simulink and the specific issues of the program´s usability. The object orientated modelling language Modelica shows an alternative approach, where the simulation program as far as possible builds up the signal structure and manipulates the needed equations. Whether this claim can be fulfilled has been examined by rebuilding an existing model of a diesel engine in Modelica/Dymola.
