Coefficients and Adjustment Calculations: Measurement Uncertainty under GUM.
Part 1: Best Fit Straight Lines

The determination of the coefficient of thermal expansion is a typical example where the measurand is defined by a best fit straight line through a variable number of measured data points. According to experience users have some troubles with the inevitable expression of uncertainty (in compliance to GUM) of such measurands. This paper presents explicit formulae for the measurement uncertainty of the coefficients of best fit straight lines. These formulae are GUM-consistent and easy to apply.
