Automatic Controller Tuning based on Control Performance Monitoring

Keywords: Control performance monitoring, performance index, disturbance impulse, response, performance optimisation

In the process industry there is an increasing interest in control performance monitoring (CPM) as a component of comprehensive and effective plant condition monitoring. This paper presents new approaches for automatic controller tuning based on CPM methods and indices. The aim is to optimise the performance of control loops being identified as poorly/wrongly tuned. The procedures described lead to controller settings, which guarantee best achievable PID controller (stochastic) performance. The methods are classified into direct and indirect (i. e. iterative) groups. The requirement and properties of two prominent methods belonging to each group are outlined and compared.
