Antenna-based Emission Measurements

Discussing antenna-based emission measurements implies an understanding of the receiving process. This is given on the example of the rod dipole, for transient as well as for time harmonic reception. The conversion factor from incident electric fieldstrength to EMF is derived for single dipoles. The reciprocity theorem can be used to obtain this factor for arbitrary antenna types. With the Hertz dipole as the reference for all types of transmitting EMC antennas the effective height can be calculated. Sniffer probes are the antenna types used for reception only. Some remarks concerning their proper use are given. Anechoic chambers and open area test sites are discussed of given as well as quality criteria. The final issue is the relation between antenna based and alternative measurement results.
