The osmotic affinity sensor can be applied for measuring the concentration of low-molecular-weight analytes, that are able to displace a polymer affinity ligand from its complex with an affinity receptor. The ligand exchange takes place in a micro-membrane-osmometer, where it changes the concentration of the polymer molecules and therefore the hydrostatic pressure difference to the external liquid. Since the exchange of dextran and glucose molecules at the sugar binding site of Concanavalin A is rapid and reversible, the glucose concentration can be measured on-line by the osmotic affinity sensor.
