Different physical parameters fluorescence yield, viscosity, and osmotic pressure have been utilised for measuring the effect of a low-molecular weight analyte on the concentration of a polymer affinity complex in a microdialysis chamber. The application as an on-line sensor requires high rates of ligand exchange. This is guaranteed when the affinity of the applied receptor protein is not too high. Glucose sensors basing on this principle can be implanted in the subcutaneous tissue and have a potential for blood glucose monitoring.
