A New Type of Strain-Gauge-based Strain-Sensor for the Monitoring of Buildings

Keywords: strain, stress, strain gauge, encapsulation, structure monitoring

Structural monitoring of building structures requires the precise and continuous measurement of states of strain and stress. For this purpose an encapsulated sensor was developed which protects the sensible strain gauge and can easily be integrated into a small measurement-borehole. For mechanical adaptation a clamping procedure for two conical bodies was optimized so that the measurement range covers the whole elastic range of steel. Suitable calibration procedures as well as measurement methods for early detection of structural defects were developed. A strain gauge layout matching to the specific spatial conditions was elaborated for the sensor. The strain gauge is protected by a novel two-layer plastic coating which was tested in a special accelerated aging procedure.
