A Thermal Flow Detector with Integrated Model Based Self Diagnosis

Flow Control of liquids and gases under rough operating conditions requires flow detectors, being particularly resistant and robust with respect to chemical and mechanical influences. Additionally they have to indicate as fast as possible, if a given threshold value is exceeded, regardless of interfering variables (e.g. medium temperature). The aim of the model based self diagnosis mainly consists in suppressing the influence of the interfering variables on the switching points as well as on reading of the flow detector.
To diagnose the detector´s behavior, the well-known inputs and the measured outputs of the flow detector are supplied to a residuum generator based on the mathematical model of the detector. A deflection of its residues indicates the occurrence of deviations between the detector and its mathematical model. Evaluation of the residues leads to medium´s temperature and temperature of the coating as well as to the flow rate.
