This paper deals with the design methodology of fault diagnosis systems based on signal analysis. Fault diagnosis systems generaly have to be engineered individualy, therefore it is of interest to develop tools and schematic design process as aimed in this paper, which reduce the engineering expense. Employing techniques and methods available in the fields of signal and image processing as also decision theory and tailoring them to the needs of fault diagnosis systems in order to work a systematic design process is the goal followed. Based on the methodology described, a CAE-Tool for signal-based diagnosis systems has been developed. Part 1 of this publication deals with the design procedure, in part 2 it will be applied to a real-world example.
