A Predictive Gear Shift System for Motor Vehicles using Environmental Data

The paper deals with strategies and algorithms for optimal gear shifting in automobiles with automatic transmission. A predictive driver model is developed for simulation purposes. Furthermore, an algorithm which predicts the vehicle speed to be demanded by the driver in a receding horizon is presented. This is incorporated both in the simulation system and the final predictive gear shift system installed in a test vehicle. In the paper, the principles of optimal gear shifting taking into account the environmental data and the practical experience obtained with the proposed system in simulation as well as in road tests are described.
