Virtual Portal – Multiple Tenant Capabilities for Websphere Portal

Keywords: portal, access control, partitioning, hosting, software as a Service

Websphere.® Portal 5.1 allows creating and managing additional virtual Portal servers on demand, without iterating the full software installation process over and over again. Such “virtual portals” are established by partitioning a single Portal installation into independent logical servers. End users will not be able to distinguish whether their request is served by a full Portal installation or by a logical Portal, which has been defined within such a shared environment. This article explains the basic technical concepts, which have been applied. The article also describes usage scenarios in which virtual portals are leveraged to implement solutions for hosting Portal services.
