User- and task-centered design processes for web-based training modules

The article focuses on development and design processes for web-based training modules (WBT). In the beginning the use of the Internet in this area was limited to the simple distribution of learning materials using web services. Today the interest shifted to a more advanced use of the hypermedial potential of the Internet and its communication features. The authors currently participate in several German projects in this field and want to share the process related findings of these projects. Similarities between software-engineering and the development of multimedia learning modules advise the use of established process models from the Software Engineering world. Therefore a combination of the classical software engineering spiral model and the ISO 13407 Usability Engineering model were taken as a starting point and were refined for the use in the WBT design process. This process framework is now in practical use and under further development.
