This article describes the notion of easy-to-use computer-based devices known as information appliances. The interaction design for appliances differs from the traditional desktop computer approaches. Targeted users are likely to have no technical proficiency. Simplicity is a core requirement for consumer devices. These differences are pointed out and several design principles are presented. As an example, the Symbian Quartz user interface is discussed.
