Aiming at more intuitive interaction between humans and future information and communication technology, engineers and psychologists have started to adopt principles of face-to-face communication for modern interface design. The use of natural speech, gestures and facial displays in so-called anthropomorphic interface agents (AIA) is considered to bring about specific advantages in user motivation and performance. Research in this field however is unsystematic and does not yet allow for a final judgement of possible gains and losses when implementing the new interface concept in different application areas. The current paper provides a short systematic overview over some crucial determinants in this field. For this purpose we differentiate between independent variables (appearance and behaviour of the AIAs), dependent variables (acceptance, efficiency/effectivity) and moderator variables (user and task characteristics). Against the background of recent results specific research problems are discussed and new strategies are suggested.
