The degree of network use has increased in current car types. In 1989 the CAN-protocol was introduced into production cars, which then was used to connect 3 modules. Now the total amount of electronic control units has risen to over 40 pieces. Besides the increased amount of modules, complexity has also been extended by the distribution of functions. In the first applications only modules have been connected, that can also work in an autonomous manner (ex. engine power control, engine management, and transmission control). Now functions have been spread across many modules. Specific tools are required to deal with such complexity. These tools must cover the whole development cycle, from the concept of network, the development of each module, and integration in test cars, down to production and repair.
