The modern principle of service oriented architectures seems ideally suited to the design of software agents. If the community could agree on the characteristic properties of software agents the principle should directly lead to a reference architecture that then would serve as a framework for developing specific agents. On the basis of commonly accepted properties this paper proposes such a reference architecture and demonstrates how known agent architectures can easily be embedded into it.
