Speech transmission in digital mobile radio systems usually comprises speech coding for bit rate reduction, channel coding for error protection, and error concealment at the receiver side to reduce the annoying audible effects of residual bit errors after channel decoding. This paper focusses at a joint optimization of all these algorithms. A novel universal approach to error concealment using soft decision information as well as a priori knowledge about speech codec parameters is presented. It is shown that error concealment can take over to a certain extent the task of error protection.
