For many years, the ubiquitous technological support of life and work in the intelligent home of the future has been an important field of man-machine cooperation. The user interface is gaining importance as a criterion for the acceptance of smart home applications. New chances for improvements in the application domains of security, comfort, and environment are possible with developments in the fields of information and communication technologies in combination with intelligent sensors and an increasing number of networks in the private home. Intelligent home automation bears many advantages, e.g. with extensive and reliable alarm functions, resource-saving building automation technology or technological support for the elderly or people in care. On the one hand, there is a potential for a remarkable increase of comfort. On the other hand, there are a lot of obstacles to overcome: The complexity of interaction with the system increases with a higher degree of networking and automation. In addition, different systems lack compatibility. The paper introduces selected smart home projects in Germany and defines guidelines for easy-to-use integrated user interfaces.
