SDL based Prototyping for Telecommunication Systems

The application of formal description techniques for software engineering reduces the development effort concerning complex software systems substantially. Telecommunications systems are complex distributed software systems, which are subjected to a short life cycle. Prototyping in an early stage of protocol- and software development is therefore an important constituent of the development process, in order to test the functionality of the system in a real environment before ist final implementation. The Specification and Description Language SDL helps to improve the software development in combination with matured CASE-tools decisively. In particular prototyping is facilitated and accelerated by the integrated development using SDL. The paper introduces briefly the context of telecommunications systems and describes the use of SDL and MSC for prototyping in detail. Two examples from practical experience illustrate the use of SDL for prototyping.
