This Ph.D. thesis thoroughly analyzes the concept of communication by transferring code instead of messages, in particular in the form of mobile processes (“agents”), and presents a run-time system for mobile agents. The system has several unique properties and delivered considerable speed gains in an application for distributed searching. As a conclusion, mobile code rather than mobile agents, which require additional expense, is predicted to become an important mechanism in future distributed application platforms.
