In the beginning of the 1990s Electronic Meeting Systems (EMS) and their effects were the most important issue of American IS research. However, the diffusion of EMS is still very low. This paper introduces EMS using the example of the Koblenz CSCW-Laboratory and summarizes the effects and the potential of EMS. The main section of the paper analyzes possible reasons for the low diffusion of EMS and introduces new approaches to improve the acceptance. The problem areas include: State of the art of technology, critical mass of users and usage opportunities, moderation and the role of the moderator, cognitive load and the embedding of EMS into its work context and the physical work environment context.
