The Role of Cryptology in Modern Communication Technologies

The application of cryptological methods to achieve security is a necessary condition for user acceptance of modern communication technologies. The level of security is an important criterion for the evaluation of these methods. In this paper, we present some aspects in cryptology and security, and give a survey on the foundations of a certain class of encryption methods, the stream ciphers. Stream ciphers are often applied in communication systems because of their special properties. Characteristics like high security level, high encryption rates, and their favourable behaviour in noisy environment make them very attractive in respect to the trends in communication technologies like growing data rates and the importance of mobility.
