In the world of Ubiquitous Computing computers will be everywhere. The number of computers will increase dramatically. All these computers will be able to communicate with each other, either on demand of the user or even on their own behalf. This behavior will challenge our networks in a totally different way than today. We need a much larger address space (IP version 6), we need access to mobile networks without boundaries via short, medium and long distances. A combination of different access technologies will be used; ad hoc networks need to be formed.
The article will deal with aspects of implementation and standardization in order to force this development and give a state-of-the-art report on the evolution path towards communications for ubiquitous computing.
