The basic concept of the structuring of mechatronic systems presented brings about hierarchically organized and distributed information processing. For this purpose, individual modules are identified already at an early design stage; they will later be assigned a local information-processing unit. Rapid prototyping serves for testing and optimizing the interaction between distributed physical and information-processing components during the hardware-in-the-loop experiment under real-time conditions. This approach will be presented and exemplified by a series hybrid drive train for passenger cars.
