Traditional user interfaces on desktop computers restrict the design space for the creation of user interfaces mainly to the audio visual design of applications. Graspable, tangible and embedded user interfaces offer much richer means for interaction which are of great interest when envisioning and implementing learning applications and appliances. In our work we investigate how embedding novel tangible user interfaces (TUIs) intensify fun aspects and thus can enhance the learning experience. We show three experimental appliances based on novel tangible user interfaces which are ideal to drive learning applications. We show in some detail the implementation and properties of those novel user interfaces, and show how these apply to applications targeted for children.
