Organizational Approaches to Coordination in Multi-Agent Systems

Several theories have been suggested upon which the design of multi-agent systems can built. However, none of them helps to understand the relationships between software agents and an enterprise in general which may own or embed them. In such cases, the organizational structure of an embedding enterprise can bind agents by providing aims and goals, competencies, resources, etc. This paper, thus, explicitely assumes that software agents are linked to organizational positions within enterprises. It develops the beginnings of an organizational theory for software systems composed of (semi-)autonomous agents. It suggests a set of tools by which the behavior of agents joining an agent system can be influenced. Finally, grounding in a life-cycle perspective on multi-agent systems, it presents a framework within which the creation, modification, and dissolution of agent systems can be described, analyzed, explained, and performed.
