How to observe the Internet

Observing distributed computing systems is key to their control. We give a brief introduction into the possibilities and difficulties of observing distributed systems like the Internet. The difficulties not only stem from non-deterministic behavior of such systems; the absence of (sufficiently synchronized) global time and the possibilities of partial failures make this task even more challenging.
