Multiple Sensor Data Fusion as a Key Function in Surveillance Systems

Mature surveillance sensors for dynamic scenarios with many different, separately or collectively moving objects are available now or in the near future. The achievable performance of surveillance systems, however, is not only determined by the individual performance characteristics of each sensor and the corresponding data exploitation algorithms. The technology development is rather driven by the development of distributed networks of homogeneous or heterogeneous sensors collecting a plethora of different, mutually complementary aspects of the scenario. The intelligent fusion of the resulting data streams is fundamental for producing a recognized situation picture. The general tasks of multiple sensor fusion as well as selected approaches to multiple sensor tracking, sensor management, and combined tracking & classification are discussed and illustrated by selected examples.
