Multi-sensor fusion deals with the automatic acquisition, association, correlation, and combination of several sensor signals and other information sources. Microsystem-based signals offer particular demands on the fusion techniques. The paper presents some criteria for a classification of multi-sensor systems and introduces a generic sensor fusion architecture. The criteria and the generic architecture are then used to describe the sensor fusion process in an application example, microsystem-based online tool wear monitoring in turning.
