Model Based Support for Self-Directed Learning in CSCL-Environments – an Appropriate Approach between Instruction and Self-Direction

Self-directed learning can be seen as a prerequisite for successful learning within collaborative learning situations. But at the same time collaborative learning aims at enhancing the students′ competences in self-directed learning. Learning encompasses aspects of both self-direction and instruction. Due to their primarily instructive nature existing approaches, such as cooperation scripts, are less suitable for facilitating self-direction in collaborative learning processes. In this article, we present our model based approach mod-CSCL. mod-CSCL focuses on the support of students during elaborating and applying a self-directed learning process. This approach is based on graphical representations (maps) guiding a group of students through their collaborative process without being too instructive. It is a special feature of mod-CSCL that it allows the support of different groups of students requiring different levels of instructions at the same time.
