Mobile Devices and Simplicity – a Contradiction?

Keywords: Mobile devices, Simplicity, Handheld devices, User interface design process

Mobile devices have achieved a market penetration of over 2 billion users worldwide in the last few years. This figure is still rising quickly, as so is the number of applications being integrated. The upshot of this is a need to cater to heterogeneous user groups characterized by diversified, sometimes even conflicting main use cases. At the same time, form factors and input/output elements for user interaction remain for the most part limited to small screens and a reduced set of keys.
This combination of issues confronts user interface designers with specific challenges, which are not easy to deal with.
