Mobile Applications: Working and Learning in Global Networks

The combination of small handheld terminals and global networking is leading to completely new applications which will dramatically change the way we live and work. It´s already happening today. Think of the increasing number of people who telecommute from homef or a mobile office. Call centers have evolved into Customer Care Centers which allow highly qualified specialists to serve customers without being restricted to a particular location. But it´s not just the way we work that will change. We´re also going to have to rethink our whole concept of education in an era where curricula can be taught worldwide via the Internet or internal company networks. Already the first accredited electronic universities have been established, with their own electronic libraries, conference and E-mail systems. Just as important as the development of new applications and technologies, however, will be the changes that will have to be made in the way we work and the way we organize our work. Only then will we be able to ensure efficient working and learning in the information age.
