Mobile Applications

Besides the rapid growing of high-speed wired networks, the importance of mobile communication, today especially of mobile speech services is rising. Herewith the possibilities of mobile data communication using wireless wide-area networks are getting more and more important. This development shows that the wish for an overall information access together with simultaneous mobility are key issues today, which means "Information anywhere, anytime" and "mobile awareness". Mobile Computing enables the usage of applications ranging from electronic mail, over data access up to complex collaborative applications on portable and mobile devices. This article discusses first the characteristics of mobile applications and shows selected application areas. Following this, different system concepts and their realisation are described.
