Lossless Image Compression

For lossy compression of images there are powerful algorithms. Depending on the image type and the visual needs compression factors between 5 and 100 can be achieved. Lossless compression of images however is much harder. Standard compression tools like Compress or Zip do fail on typical images. However even sophisticated algorithms only can achieve moderate compression factors in the range from 2–3. This article does explain the principle of standard techniques for lossless image compression. Finally ideas of newer algorithms are discussed.
