Knowledge, Media and Design generate together a socio-technical dynamic, the starting point for Knowledge Media Design, a new field of research and practice. Theoretical, design and technical disciplines merge to develop new research methods which their inherent wide reaching potential. Design aspects of knowledge communication, which have to date been underrated, are primarily helpful to address not knowing.
These aspects center around cognitive styles and types of knowledge that do not meet the formal expectations of organizations and thus fail to be legitimated through method (Luhmann 1977). Design thinking meets the challenge to innovate as postulated by society and corporations and helps to overcome the limited rationality in economic and technical methods. The presented reflections and ideas stem from projects conducted at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and the University of the Arts Berlin, Institute of Electronic Business (see Stephan 2005b; Stephan, Klein, Petersen 2006).
