The due introduction of electronic health cards in the German public health care system is, at the time being, one of the biggest IT-projects world-wide. Based on a judicial order, it is carried out by private entities and mostly determined by economic interests without significant legal input. The article describes the background of the project and its main critical legal aspects, keeping in mind technical and economic circumstances. At the same time, the electronic health card is an important example of the challenges of tomorrow´s world of ubiquitous computing.
