Crossbar interconnects have applications in routing systems for telecommunication as well as in computer architectures. They provide interconnections between N input channels and M output channels which are controlled through a 2D switching matrix. The necessary fan-in and fan-out operations as well as the scaling behaviour for an increasing number of input channels cause the interest in 3D free-space optical interconnects for the realisation of such crossbar switches. Planar-optics combines the advantages of the 3D nature of free-space optics with the compactness and robustness of integrated systems. We describe various optoelectronic crossbar switches which have been realised in planar optics.
